On invitation from S. Bishan Singh Samundri, the first Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Dr. Karamjit Singh Rai, Professor of Biology at the University of Notre Dame, U.S.A, founded and established the department of Biological Sciences at Guru Nanak Dev University during 1973-74 academic year. Historically, the Department made note-worthy strides during the last thirty years and overtime blossomed into the School of Life Sciences, comprising six major departments with International standing.

I. S. Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Lectureship in Life Sciences:

S. Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Public Charitable Trust originally instituted this endowed Lectureship in 2002 to rotate among the six departments in the School of Life Sciences. Over the years, this Lectureship has been eminently successful. In November 2013, it completed two cycles of rotation among the six departments. With the addition of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences to the School of Life Sciences in June 2013, this Lectureship will henceforth yearly rotate among the seven constituent departments in life sciences.

A new Mou was signed on April 1, 2014 between the Trust and GNDU. The endowment established by the Trust shall be used to cover all costs for travel, an award of Rs. 25,000/- and a specially engraved plaque commemorating this Lectureship Award. The University will provide local hospitality and lodging for the invited scientist in the University Guest House.

The Objective of this Memorial Lectureship is to bring a truly distinguished scholar of national and/or international stature to GNDU for a period of 1-2 days each year to deliver an invited public lecture of particular research interest to the faculty and students of the host department and to interact with them on a one on one basis.

The signing ceremony participants from R to L are: Director Research, VC, Prof. K. S. Rai, Dean, AA and Dean, Life Sciences Faculty, GNDU.

II. S. Bishan Singh Samundri Memorial Lectureship Award in Agricultural and related Sciences at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

In memory of the founder Vice- Chancellor of GNDU, S. Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Public Charitable Trust instituted , a second Endowed, annual, Memorial Lectureship Award entitled "S. Bishan Singh Samundri Memorial Lectureship Award in Agricultural and Related Sciences" in 2010, The objective of this Lectureship Award is to posthumously honour and pay homage to a revered educationist and an exceptionally astute administrator who not only established the early contours and the road-map of the development of the University but has also been a visionary in advancement of agriculture and rural social structures in Punjab. His personal touch and care of individual students while still as a lecturer at the Government Agriculture College, Ludhiana, and Khalsa College, Amritsar is highly venerated. His students and colleagues still remember him as a compassionate and a courteous teacher and friend. Prof. K. S. Rai, the Chairman of the Trust, was privileged to have been invited by the then Vice-Chancellor, Samundri to found and establish the new Department of Biology in 1973 at Guru Nanak Dev University. This provided an opportunity for Prof. Rai to experience, first-hand, the warmth and glow of a gifted educationist who, in its initial stages as the first VC of GNDU, was instrumental in transforming a barren tract of land into an island of creativity. He was a team player par excellence and an inspiring leader whose enthusiasm was infectious. His life long commitment to advance higher education and agriculture and in the process enhance quality of rural life in Punjab is legendary.

The Memorial Lectureship will bring truly distinguished scholars of national and/or international reputation in agricultural research with particular attention to emergence of co-related social problems in Punjab such as over exploitation of fertilizers and pesticides, depleting water table, degradation of the environment and emergence of hitherto largely absent human diseases, to the University Campus for a period of 1-2 days each year, to deliver an invited Public Lecture and to interact with the faculty and students on a one to one basis for the duration of the stay of the Visiting Lecturer on the Campus. Such synergistic interaction would help sensitize the University community for a multi-faceted approach to problem solving relating to agricultural sustainability and societal welfare.
